Morocco is divided into 16 administrative regions, which are further divided into 43 provinces, 9 wilayas and 22 prefectures, which in turn are split into 1,547 urban and rural communes. The regions are Grand Casablanca, Chaouia-Ouardigha, Doukkala-Abda, Fes-Boulemane, Gharb-Chrarda-Beni Hssen, Guelmim-Es Smara, Laayoune-Boujdour-Sakia El Hamra, Marrakech-Tensift-Al Haouz, Meknes-Tafilalet, Oriental, Rabat-Sale-Zemmour-Zaer, Souss-Massa-Draa, Tadla-Azilal, Tanger-Tetouan and Taza-Al Hoceima-Taounate. The regions are administered by Walis (governors) appointed by the King.
