Morocco's labour force (15+) numbered 11.14 million in 2006, equivalent to around 51.2 per cent of the total population. 9.9 million people were employed, 7.2 million of whom were men and 2.7 million were women. The national unemployment rate in 2005 was estimated to be 11 per cent, affecting 1.2 million people, but unemployment in urban areas is estimated to be as high as 33 per cent among the young. Slightly under half the workforce is based in urban areas. Figures for 2007 put the unemployment rate at 9.6 per cent and 9.4 per cent in 2008.
