PRIMARY/SECONDARY/EDUCATION

Students work towards the Lebanese Baccalaureate in High School. In the education year 1998-99 there were 2,719 schools.

HIGHER EDUCATION

There are 13 universities in Beirut, namely the American University of Beirut, (the largest one outside the USA), the Saint Joseph University, the Lebanese University run by the Ministry of National Education, the Arab University of Beirut, Beirut University College, Université de Saint-Esprit - Kaslik, The Lebanese Academy of Arts, Notre Dame University, Haygazian College University, Al Jinan University, The Centre of Higher Studies of Makassed, University of Balamand and Superior Institute of La Sagesse.

ADULT ILLITERACY

The overall literacy rate in 2007 was 89.6 per cent. For males this is 93.4 per cent, and for females, 86.0 per cent.
